Pool Electrical Safety

Water conducts electricity. A pool with any electrical fault — a corroded pump motor, a faulty underwater light — can energize the pool water enough to electrocute a swimmer. California code addresses this with GFCI protection on every pool circuit and a bonded equipotential grid that keeps everything within reach at the same electrical potential.

• GFCI protection on the pump, underwater lights, and all outlets within 20 feet
• Bonding grid connecting the pool structure, all metal within 5 feet, the pump, and the equipotential ring
• Underwater lights on a dedicated GFCI circuit
• Equipment disconnect within sight of the pump

Tingling sensation when touching pool water or metal ladders; GFCI trips when the pump runs; corroded bonding wire visible at the equipment pad. Any of these — stop swimming and call a licensed electrician.
