The Problem
Zinsco panels (also sold branded as Sylvania and Kearney) have a design flaw where the aluminum bus bar oxidizes and pits under the copper breaker contacts. Under load, arcing at the contact point melts the breaker to the bus — making it physically impossible to trip, and often welding the breaker permanently on.
How to Identify One
Colored breaker handles (red, blue, green, yellow) rather than the standard black. Panel label reads Zinsco, Sylvania-Zinsco, or Kearney.

The Fix
Full panel replacement. Like FPE, there's no code-approved breaker-swap fix. Some jurisdictions consider Zinsco panels a fire hazard sufficient to trigger inspection during a home sale.
