Low-Voltage Basics
Modern landscape lighting is 12V, powered by a 120V-to-12V transformer mounted near the panel or on an exterior wall. Long runs need heavier wire (10 or 8 gauge) to prevent voltage drop that dims fixtures at the end of the run.
Design Principles
- Path lights every 8–10 feet along walkways
- Uplights on trees and architectural features
- Downlights (moonlighting) from tree canopies for ambient soft light
- Warm color temperature (2700K–3000K) for a residential feel

What Needs a Permit
The 120V circuit and transformer install requires a permit and licensed electrician. The 12V fixture runs downstream are DIY-friendly.
