Introduction
Flickering lights are one of the most common calls we get, and the causes range from a $12 dimmer swap to a $5,000 service repair. Knowing which pattern you're seeing tells you how urgent it is.
Common Causes
- One bulb flickers — the bulb is at end of life or the socket contact is loose. Replace the bulb; if it continues, the fixture socket needs attention.
- One fixture flickers — likely a loose wire nut in the fixture box or an incompatible LED-dimmer pairing.
- One room flickers — a loose connection somewhere on that branch circuit, often at a back-stabbed outlet or switch.
- Whole house flickers, especially when the AC or dryer kicks on — momentary voltage drop, sometimes normal, sometimes a warning sign of a loose main lug or utility neutral.
- Random whole-house flicker with no load change — this is the serious one. Often a failing service neutral, which can damage electronics and create shock hazards.
Need a licensed Orange County electrician?
Family-owned since 1974. C-10 #1050793 Licensed, Bonded & Insured. Serving all of Orange County.
Safety Concerns
Whole-house flickering with no obvious trigger, or flickering accompanied by warm outlets, dimming that doesn't recover, or a burning smell near the panel, is a code-red. Loose service neutrals can cause 240-volt appliances to see wildly unbalanced voltage — enough to fry every powered-on electronic in the house at once.
DIY vs Professional Repair
Bulb and dimmer swaps are safe DIY. Anything involving loose connections in boxes, outlets, or the panel requires a licensed electrician. Loose neutrals at the meter or main lug must be repaired by a C-10 in coordination with SCE.
Cost Expectations
Bulb/dimmer fix: under $50 in parts. Tightening a loose branch-circuit connection: $150–$300 service call. Diagnosing and repairing a loose main lug or service neutral: $400–$1,500 depending on whether SCE needs to disconnect.
Orange County Considerations
Homes on older SCE overhead service (much of North Orange County — Brea, Fullerton, Placentia) are more prone to service-side neutral issues, especially after wind events. Coastal corrosion accelerates the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can LED bulbs cause flickering on their own?+
Yes. Most LED-flicker issues are dimmer incompatibility. Non-dimmable LEDs on dimmers, or old incandescent-era dimmers driving modern LEDs, produce visible flicker. Match the dimmer to the bulb.
Is flickering when the AC starts normal?+
A brief, barely-noticeable dim is normal — motors draw high inrush current. A prolonged flicker or a hard drop is not, and warrants a look at the main lug.
