The Monthly Test

Once a month: press TEST on each GFCI outlet in the house. The RESET button should pop out and power should cut to that outlet and everything downstream on the same circuit. Press RESET to restore power.

If It Fails

A GFCI that won't trip on TEST is dead. Replace it promptly, especially if it protects a kitchen, bathroom, or exterior outlet.
