When It's Optional
If your existing panel is a code-compliant brand (Square D, Siemens, Eaton), has open slots, and your load calc still fits under the main rating, you don't need 200 amps just for peace of mind. Add the specific circuit you need.
DIY vs Professional
Panel upgrades are not DIY. They require a permit, an SCE service disconnect, a licensed C-10, and a city inspection. Attempting it yourself voids insurance and, in California, is a misdemeanor.
