What an Arc Fault Is
When a wire connection loosens, insulation cracks, or a nail nicks a cable behind drywall, tiny arcs can jump the gap. They don't draw enough current to trip a standard breaker, but they generate localized heat — and are a leading cause of electrical fires. AFCI breakers detect the electronic signature of an arc and cut power.
Where CA Code Requires AFCI
Bedrooms, family rooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, closets, laundry rooms, and kitchens all require AFCI protection under the current California Electrical Code. New construction and any circuit extension or modification in these rooms must have it.

Should I Retrofit Existing Circuits?
Code doesn't require retrofitting an existing, unmodified circuit — but we recommend it, especially in bedrooms, especially in homes with aluminum branch or older cloth-insulated wiring. A single AFCI breaker is $40–$70 in parts.

Why does my AFCI trip randomly?+
Older motors (vacuum cleaners, treadmills) and some LED drivers produce electrical noise that early AFCIs misread as arcs. Modern AFCIs have improved dramatically. If yours nuisance-trips, a firmware-current replacement usually solves it.
