The Problem With Aluminum Branch Wiring
Between 1965 and 1975, a copper shortage led builders to use solid aluminum for branch circuits (outlets, switches, lights). Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper under load, oxidizes into a resistive coating, and loosens at connection points. CPSC data shows those homes are 55 times more likely to have a connection point at fire-hazard conditions than copper-wired homes.
The Two Accepted Repairs
- COPALUM crimp — a special crimp connector applied with a tool from Tyco Electronics that pigtails a short copper wire onto each aluminum end. CPSC-recommended, effectively permanent, requires a certified installer.
- AlumiConn purple wire nut — a set-screw-based connector approved by CPSC as a code-compliant alternative. Faster and cheaper to install.

When Full Rewire Makes More Sense
If the house is being remodeled, opened up, or the wiring is also degraded (cracked insulation, prior handyman splices, mixed with knob-and-tube), a whole-home rewire in copper is often close in cost to pigtailing hundreds of connections — and it's a permanent fix rather than a mitigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are switches and outlets rated for aluminum safe?+
CO/ALR-rated devices are safer than standard ones on aluminum, but they don't eliminate the risk at wire nuts and box connections. Pigtailing is still the CPSC recommendation.
Is the large aluminum service entrance cable dangerous?+
No. Stranded aluminum feeder and service-entrance cable is code-compliant and safe. The problem is specifically solid aluminum branch wiring.
